Each year we organise two Days of Special Interest to allow members to pursue a topic in greater depth. This often takes the form of two hours in the morning and one and a half hours in the afternoon with a delicious sandwich lunch and a glass of wine.

Study Day-Wednesday May 19th 2010
|
On Wednesday 19th May 2010, 40 members and guests were treated to “5000 years of Glass in Three Hours”, when Andy McConnell, one of Britain’s leading authorities on most types of glassware, and the first-ever glass specialist recruited to BBC TV’s Antiques Road show, led a Study Day at Cheddon Hall.
Coffee was served as participants began to arrive with boxes and baskets containing their own treasures, to be displayed on a side table, and Andy supervised the unpacking of his own collection of miscellaneous items of glass pieces.

His illustrated talk was linked by his humorous commentary and mischievous asides on his own life and those of his Antiques Road show colleagues. The subject spanned 3000BC to the present, but concentrated on Medieval, Art Deco and Modern.
Following a break for a delicious sandwich and wine lunch, it was time to get close to and handle some of the hundreds of examples of glass objects which he had provided, together with moulds and patterns, to enable his audience to appreciate the skill and artistry of their production.
To round off the day, everyone gathered around the table, while individual pieces were identified by their owners, and Andy expertly appraised and highlighted their special points of interest.
